On Tuesday afternoon, 29-year-old Nasim Aghdam allegedly shot up YouTube headquarters. Three people were injured before Aghdam died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ABC 7 News reported.
According to ABC 7 News, Aghdam was a Southern California resident who drove to San Bruno specifically to carry out her attack. Multiple sources have verified that Aghdam was a YouTube star who frequently utilized the social media website.
Aghdam allegedly has a website that details her issues with YouTube, specifically for censorship and demonetization of her video content. Her decline in viewership and ad revenue is said to be a possible motivation behind the shooting.
Here’s what she posted on her website, ABC 7 reported:
“Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!”
She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.”
The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.”
Aghdam allegedly included the following video by YouTuber Casey Neistat, where he explains how YouTube has demonetized some videos.
The shooter allegedly carried out the attack with a 9mm handgun.
